The Brief of S6 Biology Students’ Visit to Endangered Species Resources Centre

Visit to Endangered Species Resource Centre

On December 4, 2024, the S6 biology students had the valuable opportunity to visit the Endangered Species Centre in Sham Shui Po, organized by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD). During their visit, they were engaged by an insightful presentation delivered by the AFCD team, which focused on the various endangered species found in Hong Kong. The students learned about the critical issues surrounding these species, including the controversial use of animal parts such as rhino horns and saiga antelope horns in traditional Chinese medicine.

In addition to the informative talk, the students had the chance to observe living specimens, including the green iguana (Iguana iguana) and the hill myna (Gracula religiosa). This hands-on experience allowed them to appreciate these unique organisms up close, enhancing their understanding of biodiversity.

Throughout the visit, the students also delved into the concept of eco-security and the vital role it plays in preserving our planet’s biodiversity. They discussed the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the impact of human activities on wildlife. Inspired by their experiences, the students expressed a strong commitment to environmental conservation and pledged to become more responsible citizens in the future. This visit not only broadened their knowledge but also instilled a sense of responsibility toward protecting endangered species and their habitats.
