PowerThru Program by the EmpowerU 24-25

The PowerThru Education Program is an initiative from EmpowerU to create education opportunities and a learning community, leveraging their pedagogical expertise and connection to the University of Hong Kong, their team has partnered up with 10 excellent instructors to introduce five courses to students.

In this school year, they provide two courses in Broadway:

Built it

In this course, students learnt the fundamentals of floor plan drawing and elevation drawing under the expert guidance of our community instructor, JJ who is a local-born Filipino architect working in Hong Kong. Students were then taught how to build a basic 3D physical model from their initial 2D floor plans. At the end of the course, students with the best designs and models won prizes and received feedback from real world architects who served as judges for the final showcase day held at the University of Hong Kong.

This year, the Broadway students really impressed the judges with their innovative designs! Participants in the ‘Build It’ course felt more confident after completing the course. The most valuable skills learnt in the classes include time management, design thinking, problem-solving, public speaking, building 3D models with accurate measurements, leadership skills in managing teams, building team spirit and co-operation, presentation skills, and the art of visual communication.

Student testimonials for ‘Build It’:

“I realised that I really enjoyed making things come to life more than I ever thought. I also realised I loved every process of architecture so now I feel closer to architecture in general which I have loved ever since I was a child.” – Graeciel Valencia Geronimo

“I had to learn how to start being able to work as a team because I’m usually a person that likes to work alone but this course has taught me to be more open with others” – Jasper Limbu

Mind Over Matter

In this course, students were taught the basics of neuroscience and mental wellbeing by Yusuf, an instructor who is trained in the field. We were also thrilled to have Ave, a Delia Broadway alumni now studying Biology at the University of Hong Kong to be our co-instructor for the course. Students learnt brain hacks rooted in neuroscience to conquer their everyday stress and anxiety, and explored how positive experiences can shape their mind through interactive activities and experiments. At the end of the course, students conducted research on everyday factors that affect the mental wellbeing of teenagers in Hong Kong (e.g. overuse of social media, extreme beauty standards in the media they consume etc.) and presented their neuroscience-backed solutions in front of mental wellbeing experts who served as judges for the final presentation day held at the University of Hong Kong.

The ‘Mind Over Matter’ participants impressed the judges with their in-depth research, accurate application of neuroscience concepts taught in class, and their own analytical skills! The most valuable skills learned in the classes include research skills, analytical thinking, teamwork, communication, public speaking, presentation skills, neuroscientific concepts, learning about in-depth biology and using the power of neuroscience to help cope with everyday situations.
