Poly University Biology Summer Workshop

4 students from S4, both Biology groups- 4D KHAN AYSHA BIBI, 4D HENARES, JANINA THERESE GONZAGA, 4D FARHIN SOHAIL, and 4D ZAMAN EMAAN. They had the workshop “Gut microbiome, Nutrition, and immunity” launched by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in collaboration with Yakult Company.

chands-on experience in conducting laboratory work on bacteria’s staining. Students can identify blood cells, bacteria’s nature, and the physiology of body organs. Students are also

undergoing experiments about DNA extractions, PCR, and DNA gel electrophoresis. Through these experiments, students can learn about the nature of DNA, the process of amplifying DNA and bacterial genes, also using Biological technology to determine the amount and type of DNA. Moreover, students also encountered the experiment of antioxidant determination.

They also engaged in the visit to the Yakult factory, acknowledging the history of Yakult, understanding, and applying their knowledge from the lab into the process of making Yakult.

Throughout the workshop, students were inspired to develop their experimental techniques and their knowledge regarding biological technology and their applications in daily life. Students developed their understanding of the subject as well as an early exposure to the future university environment and their future career plans.

The following are some reflections from student

KHAN AYSHA BIBI

I recently had the opportunity to attend a three-day workshop at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) focused on microbiome, gut health, and Yakult. As a senior secondary school student interested in biology and health sciences, this experience was both enlightening and engaging.

The workshop began with an introduction to the microbiome, emphasizing its crucial role in our overall health. I learned how trillions of microorganisms inhabit our bodies, particularly in the gut, and how they influence digestion, immunity, and even mental health. The lectures were interactive, allowing us to ask questions and engage in discussions with the professors and researchers. This hands-on approach made complex concepts much easier to understand.

One of the highlights was a practical session where we explored the fermentation process. We observed how Yakult, a popular probiotic drink, is produced. This session was fascinating as it connected theory with real-world applications. I had the chance to taste different fermented foods, which deepened my appreciation for how these foods contribute to gut health.

The workshop also included group activities where we collaborated with other participants to design a research project related to gut health. This experience taught me valuable teamwork skills and how to approach scientific inquiry systematically.

By the end of the workshop, I felt empowered with knowledge about the importance of gut health and the role of probiotics. The experience sparked my interest in pursuing a career in health sciences, specifically in microbiology or nutrition. Overall, attending PolyU’s workshop was an invaluable experience that not only expanded my scientific knowledge but also inspired me to explore further studies in this field. I left feeling motivated and excited about the possibilities ahead.

My Experience at PolyU’s Workshop on Microbiome, Immunity, and Gut Health

Recently, I had the chance to attend a fascinating workshop at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University focused on the microbiome, immunity, and gut health. As someone who’s always been curious about how our bodies work, this was an exciting opportunity for me!

The workshop kicked off with a friendly introduction by the speakers, who were experts in microbiology and nutrition. They explained how our gut is home to trillions of tiny microorganisms, collectively known as the microbiome. I learned that these little guys play a huge role in our overall health, from digestion to even our mood. It was surprising to find out just how much our gut can influence our immune system!

One of the highlights was the interactive session where we discussed the foods that are beneficial for gut health. The speakers emphasized the importance of a balanced diet rich in fiber, fruits, and fermented foods like yogurt and kimchi. I was amazed to learn how simple changes in what we eat can have a big impact on our microbiome.

We also participated in a hands-on activity, where we examined different temperatures to keep prebiotics in the form of yakult. It was fun to see how these beneficial bacteria can be found in various foods and supplements. we conducted experiments that we would otherwise have no opportunity of doing in school.

Overall, the experience was both educational and enjoyable. I walked away with a better understanding of how our gut health is connected to our immune system and overall well-being. I’m excited to share what I learned with my friends and family, and I can’t wait to try out some new gut-friendly recipes!

FARHIN

The three-day PolyU workshop on gut health, probiotics, and microbiomes was an exciting and informative event. Participants gathered to learn about the crucial role of gut health in overall well-being.

On the first day, experts introduced the concept of gut health. They explained how our digestive system works and why it’s important to maintain a balanced gut. The gut is home to trillions of bacteria, known as the microbiome. These bacteria help digest food, produce vitamins, and support our immune system. A healthy microbiome can improve digestion and even enhance mood.

The second day focused on probiotics, which are live bacteria that provide health benefits when consumed. We learned about different types of probiotics found in foods like yogurt, kefir, and fermented vegetables. The speakers discussed how probiotics can help restore balance in the gut, especially after taking antibiotics or experiencing digestive issues. They also emphasized the importance of choosing the right probiotic strains for specific health benefits.

On the final day, the workshop delved deeper into the science of microbiomes. We explored how lifestyle choices, such as diet and stress, affect gut health. They learned about the concept of prebiotics, which are foods that feed beneficial bacteria. The day included interactive sessions where attendees could ask questions and share their experiences with gut health.

Overall, the workshop provided valuable insights into how to improve and maintain gut health. Participants left with practical tips on incorporating probiotics and prebiotics into their diets. This knowledge can empower individuals to make healthier choices, promoting a balanced microbiome and better overall health.

HENARES

Day 1

On the first day of the workshop, the speakers introduced topics about our bodies such as the gut. I found it very interesting because I eat yogurt almost every day but I didn’t know a lot of nutritional benefits it had until the talk. I also appreciate that they talked about admissions and undergraduate programmes in PolyU because it is the school I am most interested in going to in the future.

Day 2

On the second day, we experimented on different apple pieces to see which has the highest antioxidants. The freeze-dried one had the highest because it had a longer shelf life compared to the other apples, and the fresh apple had the lowest antioxidants because it was exposed to air. My personal reflection from this experiment is that I should eat apples right after I slice it to ensure that it has the highest antioxidants, and to not leave it in the open.

Our second experiment on that day was using electrophoresis to separate DNA to size, we had to stain the DNA with dyes, finding that DNA had bacteria or had a big difference in size with each other.

Day3

We visited the Yakult factory to see how it is produced. I enjoyed the visit because the staff were welcoming, and the factory has a cute design. Yakult goes through a lot of processes to make the drink, and we even got to try Yakult without any sweeteners or water, and it tasted sour

Overall, the whole workshop was a great and fun experience for me since I was able to use lab equipment I have never used before and tried doing experiments that are usually done by university students. Everyone working in the workshop was very friendly and informative and I feel very lucky to have attended the workshop.
