Our Osaka Football Training Tour

Our Osaka Football Training Tour — February 23–26

From February 23 to 26, our school’s football team travelled to Osaka, Japan for a focused training and cultural exchange programme. The four-day trip combined high-level coaching, competitive matches against top Japanese high school teams, and opportunities to experience local culture. It was a memorable, educational and inspiring journey for every student and staff member involved.

Day 1 — Arrival and Shinsaibashisuji
We departed Hong Kong and arrived at Kansai International Airport ready to begin our programme. After settling in, the team took some time to explore Shinsaibashisuji, Osaka’s lively shopping arcade. Walking through bustling streets lined with shops, cafés and neon signs gave our students a first taste of Osaka’s energy and urban culture. The relaxed evening helped everyone recover from travel and look forward to the training ahead.

Day 2 — Coaching with Gamba Osaka and Friendly vs. Kokoku High School
The second day began with a morning training session under the guidance of a coach from Gamba Osaka, one of Japan’s most respected football clubs. The session emphasized ball control, positional discipline and quick transitional play. Our players benefited from professional demonstrations and tailored feedback that challenged them to raise their technical and tactical standards.

In the afternoon we travelled to J-GREEN Sakai, the municipal national training centre, for a friendly match against Kokoku High School — a team that consistently performs at a high level and was ranked among the top eight in the All Japan High School Soccer Tournament. The match was competitive and educational. Our students showed excellent spirit, disciplined defending and flashes of attacking creativity. While Kokoku’s experience and cohesion were clear, our players took away many positive lessons on tempo, communication and finishing under pressure.

Day 3 — Further Coaching with Gamba Osaka and Match vs. St. Michael’s (Kobe)
We began the day again with a morning session led by the Gamba Osaka coaching staff. The training built on the previous day’s focus and introduced small-sided tactical drills to encourage quicker decision-making in tight spaces. Coaches praised our team’s attitude and willingness to absorb new ideas.

In the afternoon the team faced St. Michael’s High School from Kobe. This match provided another excellent test of our students’ development and resilience. Players demonstrated growing confidence, better use of space, and strong teamwork. Coaches from both sides exchanged insights and offered encouraging feedback — an important component of this cultural and sports exchange.

Day 4 — Shopping and Tea Ceremony Experience
On the final day we enjoyed a more relaxed cultural programme, visiting Mitsui Shopping Park LaLaport where students appreciated modern Japanese retail and enjoyed some free time. The visit was followed by a deeply memorable tea ceremony experience at Sakai Plaza of Rikyu and Akiko. The tea ceremony introduced students to traditional Japanese hospitality, attention to detail, and the values of calmness and respect — qualities that mirror good sporting conduct and team discipline.

Reflections and Thanks
This Osaka tour offered a balanced mix of elite coaching, competitive matches and cultural immersion. Our players returned not only technically and tactically stronger, but also with expanded horizons, new friendships and a deeper appreciation for the discipline and traditions that underpin sport in Japan.

We would like to thank:

  • Gamba Osaka and their coaching staff for generous guidance and inspirational training sessions.
  • Kokoku High School and St. Michael’s High School for hosting us in well-contested friendly matches and for their sportsmanship.
  • The staff of Shinwa Travel for their careful organisation and support throughout the trip.
  • The school community and parents for their continued encouragement.

Looking ahead, we will use the lessons from Osaka to inform our training plans, strengthen team culture, and prepare for upcoming competitions. The experience has energized our squad and set a positive direction for the rest of the season.
