As part of the curriculum requirement of Citizenship and Social Development (CS), the Mainland Study Tour (MST) was held on 31st May, 2023 (Wed) with Aifeike Aviation Popularization of Science Education Base in Zhuhai as the destination. This MST was centred around direct cultural immersion, hands-on learning experience and authentic out-of-classroom connections with Mainland. These experiences are rare to our ethnic minority students and it was the very first time of many of them visiting Mainland.
Altogether 114 Form 5 students and 13 accompanying teachers participated in this tour. We set off in three coaches at 8:30 a.m. taking the HK-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) to Zhuhai. On the way from Broadway to Aifeike base, students and teachers experienced the convenience brought by transport infrastructure, e.g. the HZMB and the highway in Zhuhai. They facilitate the integration of cities within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Upon arrival at 1:00 p.m., we had the lunch at the staff canteen of Aifeike base. Afterwards, three groups of students, in rotation, immersed into those unique learning activities: visit to airport viewing platform, Feng Ru (pioneer of aviation in China) portrait, Aviation Culture Exhibition Hall, aircraft manufacturing plant and engaging in robot competitions.
The tour not only helps enrich our students’ understanding the types, structures and production process of aircrafts, and the principles and technology of flying, the development and planning of Zhuhai aviation industry, but also stimulates their thinking of the aviation development of Hong Kong from the macro perspective of the GBA in relation to the enriching exercise of the pre-trip information search.
The short but very productive study tour was concluded by our departure from the base at 4:00 p.m. As an old saying goes, “Travelling brings about far greater benefits than mere book learning”, the whole tour should be one of the unforgettable learning experiences of our Form 5 students throughout their secondary school life.
