AR Workshop on Eye Disease

On 4th March 2025, we are pleased to invite Professor Joseph Y.K. Chan from the HKU Ophthalmology Team to host an AR workshop on eye diseases at our school.

Professor Chan has a background in biomedical engineering and is dedicated to applying bioengineering technologies in the field of ophthalmology. His research interests include the design and testing of ophthalmic biomaterials, surgical tools, and diagnostic equipment, as well as the development of eye-on-a-chip microfluidic platforms for physiologically relevant studies in eye research.

Professor Chan is also very kind and aims to provide opportunities for secondary school students to experience the conditions associated with eye defects. We are thrilled that two of our Form 2 classes will have the chance to participate in the workshop while learning about “Sensing the Environment” in their science lessons.

The activity utilizes VR goggles and a self-developed app, which allows students to simulate the conditions of several eye defects, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and color blindness. Students are given various tasks, including matching colored stickers to the correct boxes, drawing lines, and answering simple questions after watching a video.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the lesson and learned about the causes and effects of various eye diseases. It is also important for them to understand the daily lives of patients with different eye defects.

Throughout this activity, students learned to care for others and show empathy towards individuals with eye defects. They gained a deeper understanding of the causes and effects of various diseases, which will surely help them develop respect for others.
