Anti-space Oil Campaign

“DON’T fall into ‘space oil drug’ traps!”

The Government has listed etomidate (“space oil drug”) and its three analogues (metomidate, propoxate and isopropoxate) as dangerous drugs since 14 February, 2025.

Under the strict control of the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance (DDO), trafficking and illicit manufacturing of these substances are liable to a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million. Possession and consumption of these substances in contravention of the DDO will be subject to a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment and a fine of $1 million.

 “Space oil drug” can cause serious physical and mental harm, including addiction, memory loss, seizure, unconsciousness, and even death.

Game Booth for Anti-Space Oil Drug

Students use a toy gun to remove the five major harms of space oil drug, which include addiction, memory loss, seizures, unconsciousness, and even death from the human figure. To represent the symptom of difficulty in maintaining balance after taking the space oil drug, students will need to keep their balance on a balance board while performing the task.

Drug Testing

Four drug tests were conducted in 2024-2025

  1. 21st November, 2024
  2. 18th December, 2024
  3. 20th March, 2025
  4. 9th May, 2025

Procedure:

The process take about 10 to 15 minutes, with every effort made to minimize disruption to learning and teaching, which includes:

(a) Screening interview in an interview room
(b) Collection of urine specimen in a rest room
(c) Screening test in an interview room; and
(d) Debriefing in an interview room

250 students / 30.7%

(20.8% of participating students selected by the SDT team for drug testing)
