Inter-house General Knowledge Competition

Purpose:

The purpose of the Inter-House General Knowledge Competition is to familiarize students with common senses in their everyday surroundings, and to develop critical thinking skills through discussions and Qs & As.

Venue: School Gymnasium

Time:     S1 ¡V 8:40 to 9:40

             S2 ¡V 10:00 to 11:00

               S4 ¡V 12:40 to 1:40

             S3 ¡V 2:00 to 3:00

Rules and Regulations:

1.      There are four teams in the competition, each team is allowed 4 members, with EXACT 3 members participating per section, and one member will act as a substitute.

2.      Teams are allowed to change their members ONLY between sections.

3.      Each team must select 1 team leader; he or she will sit in the middle of the team during the competition. 

4.      During the competition, if more than one member attempt to speak up at the same time, the team leader will finalize the answer.

5.      Each team must provide the name, class, and class number of each member to the teacher-in-charge prior to the competition.  If a member is unable to compete, the team leader must inform the teacher-in-charge one day in advance.

 

Guidelines:

1.      There will be three sections:

l      Mandatory Questions and Answers

l      Situational Questions and Answers

l      ¡¥Quick-fire¡¦ Questions and Answers

Each team will begin with an initial point value of 100 points.

 

Section 1: Mandatory Qs & As

1.      In this section, teams will answer questions in a consecutive order from group 1 to group 4. There are four envelops (A, B, C or D.), each envelope consists of 10 questions, each team will choose one envelop. 

2.      Each team will have 3 minutes. (A timer will remind the participants by ringing a bell when it is 15 seconds remaining, and by ringing a bell three times to indicate that time is up.)

3.      A correct answer wins 10 points and an incorrect answer or no answer DOES NOT penalize the team. There is no second attempt in this section.

Section 2: Situational Qs & As

1.      In this section, each team will watch a video clip about a situation or a story. There are 2 questions for each team.

2.      The MC will ask 1 question based on the contents of the video clip. Participants should answer the question based on the knowledge they have learned from lessons. 

3.      The correctness of the answer will be decided by the judge. The rating scale of the answers will be: 20, 15, 10 and 5 points.

 

Section 3: ¡¥Quick-fire¡¦ Qs & As

1.      In this section, there will be a total of 20 questions.

2.      Participants should ring their bell to show their attempt to answering the question. Team first ring the bell will take the advantage to answer the question.

3.      If any participants attempt to answer before the question is asked completely, MC will stop immediately and request for the answer.

4.      Members of the team should only respond after the MC has called the name of their team; otherwise, their answer will be considered as invalid and will not receive mark regardless of accuracy of the answer. The question will be repeated for the remaining teams. Their following attempt will be considered a first one.

5.      A second attempt will be allowed for any remaining teams if the answer of the first attempt is incorrect.

6.      A second attempt for all questions is allow for once only.

7.      The MC will cancel the question and tell the answer if no team rings the bell after asking the question in 5 seconds.

8.      A correct answer wins 20 points and an incorrect answer loses 10 points. A second attempt with correct answer wins 10 points and incorrect answer for the second attempt loses 5 points.

9.      Answer will be considered wrong if it is not completed within 5 seconds. 

10.  The MC will remind all teams when there are 5 questions remaining.  

Winning Circumstances:

The winner of the general knowledge competition will be the team with the highest points after all 3 sections.  Here are some regulations for tie-breakers:

Two teams with the same score

The MC will ask a ¡§back-up¡¨ quick-fire question to the two teams with the same points to determine the winner between the two teams. The two teams with the same points can ONLY answer the ¡§back-up¡¨ question.

 Three teams with the same score

 The announcer will announce a ¡¥backup¡¦ quick-fire question to the three teams with the same points, the team which answers the question correctly will automatically be the 1st place winner.  If a team answers the question wrong, it will automatically be the 3rd holder.  After the winner is determined, the remaining two teams will answer another ¡¥backup¡¦ quick-fire question to determine their final standings.

Important Reminders:

1.      During the competition, participants are NOT ALLOWED to use any materials for reference or interact with the audiences in any ways.  If they do so, they may risk to be disqualified.

2.      The organizing committee, in the case of discrepancy, solely determines the correctness of the answers.

3.      Disagreements or objections should not hinder the process of the competition; anyone with valid complaints should wait until the competition is over, and then suggesting it to the organizing committee.

4.      There will a committee responsible for handling various complaints, all valid complaints should be directed and handled by such committee.  The final decision of the committee shall prevail.

5.      All participants MUST OBEY the rules and regulations and the decisions of organizing committee.
